The Lord of the Rings' Theater Re-Release is Perfectly Timed

  • The Lord of the Rings trilogy is being re-released in US theaters just in time for its 70th anniversary.
  • This comes in the same year as a brand new Lord of the Rings movie, The War of the Rohirrim.
  • Legacy has proven that 2024 will be a huge year for The Lord of the Rings.

The Lord of the Rings has had global success and continues to grow in popularity. Peter Jackson’s movies brought the stories to a new audience, giving fans of the books the chance to see J.R.R Tolkien’s vision on a cinematic platform, and now the trilogy is being given a re-release. The trilogy won 16 Academy Awards in total, with the third installment, The Return of the King, winning all 11 awards it was nominated for, which ranged from Best Original Song to Best Director. With such accolades and 23 years on from the release of the first movie, a re-release is sure to be welcomed with open arms. The three-day event will be coming to participating theaters in the US. On Saturday, June 8th, fans can catch The Fellowship of the Ring, followed by The Two Towers on June 9th, and lastly, The Return of the King will be shown on June 10th. Each extended film has been remastered into 4K UHD.

It comes as a pleasant surprise as the franchise continues to grow. In 2022, the spin-off series, The Rings of Power, brought to screen a depiction of the Second Age of Tolkien’s world, taking place many years before The Lord of the Rings. Every adaptation has only been possible because of Tolkien’s awe-inspiring work and the context he gave to all aspects of his books. There’s no question that can’t be answered; every character has a bloodline, every place has a history and every word is credible. Although the franchise already has a large following, the re-release will refresh the brilliance of both the stories and the movies, no doubt attracting new viewers. But while the June screenings are exciting in themselves, there’s a specific reason that it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Pippin Was Smarter Than He Seemed in The Lord of the Rings

In J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Pippin’s mistakes earned him the nickname “fool of a Took,” but did he deserve this reputation?

This year, fans will be celebrating seven decades since the story of Frodo’s journey to Mordor was first published. On July 29, 1954, The Fellowship of the Ring came out, marking the beginning of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The book lays out the premise for the entire story and invites audiences to learn about the war on Middle-earth and how it had to be stopped. Frodo’s humble life changed dramatically as he became the ring bearer that led the quest, thus forming the Fellowship of the Ring with nine members from the races of the Free Peoples to get the One Ring to Mordor. In November of that same year, The Two Towers was published and focuses on the separation of Frodo and Sam from the rest of the group, who have various other battles to fight along the way. The two central Hobbits were close friends, but the journey alone bonded them in a way normal life might not have. Tolkien’s influences from World War I were reflected in the relationship he wrote between Sam and Frodo, which encompassed loyalty and a strong willingness to risk their lives for one another.

In 1955, the final installment of The Lord of the Rings trilogy was published, entitled The Return of the King. This plot saw the end of the One Ring as the Fellowship completed what they had set out to do. Prior to the trilogy, The Hobbit was published in 1937. The main character, Bilbo Baggins, has a smaller role in The Lord of the Rings, but The Hobbit narrative defines his own adventures alongside Gandalf. As Frodo’s relative, the backstory in The Hobbit gave depth to the world that Tolkien built, giving readers more than one story to get lost in. It’s certainly an exciting year for all Tolkien fans. The re-release of The Lord of the Rings has come at a milestone of 70 years since the first publication and is the ideal way to acknowledge the anniversary.

Why Gollum Didn’t Age Without the Ring but Bilbo Did in The Lord of the Rings

How Old Is Gollum In The Lord Of The Rings?

The Lord of the Rings is a universe filled with mystery. But one of the most pressing ties to the age of its most recognized character: Gollum.

  • J.R.R. Tolkien was born in South Africa.

While The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are lengthy books to get into, The Silmarillion has been noted as one of the most challenging reads because of the level of intellect Tolkien fed into the writing and the complexity of the plot. The book is a collection of events that came long before The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, explaining the history of Elves and man, as well as the primary antagonist, Morgoth, in the First Age. Though the stories in The Silmarillion came before The Hobbit, the book was the last in Tolkien’s legendarium to be published. Unfortunately, in 1973, the author had passed away before it was released. His son, Christopher Tolkien, edited and published the book in 1977, completing his father’s mastery. Tolkien had previously offered the work to a publisher. In what must have been a regrettable decision, The Silmarillion was turned down at the time; hence the publication coming posthumously. As such, Christopher Tolkien’s decision to complete the book after his father had died was an honorable tribute, allowing audiences to fully realize the extent of Tolkien’s imaginative world, which set the standard for all other books in the genre to meet.

The Silmarillion served as inspiration for the Amazon Prime series, The Rings of Power. However, the show didn’t stick closely to the source material, using artistic license to produce each episode. Many fans have called for a direct adaptation of The Silmarillion to be made, but considering the length of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings movies, it would be a difficult task to put the amount of detail that’s found in the book onto the screen and continue to do Tolkien justice, as his novels deserve. On the other hand, if the likes of Peter Jackson was able to direct the project, it may become another epic fantasy film, aiding viewers in visualizing precisely what Tolkien had penned. Included in The Silmarillion is a glossary of names and places to help readers to digest all the information they are presented with, proving just how difficult it is to keep up with the book.

The Symbolic Meaning Behind Arwen’s Necklace in The Lord of the Rings

The Evenstar doesn’t exist in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, so why did Peter Jackson invent it for his movies — and what does it represent?

As if Tolkien fans didn’t already have enough to look forward to in 2024, but at the end of the year, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be coming to cinemas. The date got pushed back due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but the wait is nearly over. The movie has taken a different direction by taking the form of animation, unlike The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, which received high praise for their use of CGI and special effects to create Tolkien’s world. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is directed by Kenji Kamiyama and has a stellar cast to voice the characters. Among them are Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand, Gaia Wise as Hera, Luke Pasqualino as Wulf and Shaun Dooley as Freca. Audiences will be able to recognize a very familiar voice from The Lord of the Rings. Playing Éowyn, Miranda Otto will be reprising the role she portrayed in the trilogy.

As the title suggests, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will focus on the Kingdom of Rohan, and it will be set over 180 years before The Lord of the Rings. The movie will also give an explanation of Helm’s Deep, which was an important part of The Two Towers. Tolkien’s world has become one of the best-known franchises around the world. His fan base remains vast, and seemingly, there is plenty of source material to keep on expanding the screen work based on his legendarium. 2024 is set to be a particularly thrilling year with the combination of the re-releases of The Lord of the Rings and the new movie, The War of the Rohirrim, coming out during the 70th anniversary of the first publication of The Fellowship of the Ring. While it is always great to hear of the adaptations that are on their way, the creators have the pressure of upholding the very high standard that previous works have set. Luckily, The War of the Rohirrim is being handled by an expert team, who are sure to deliver another magical segment of Tolkien’s fantasy world.
