Australian tennis great Wally Masur has slammed French star Adrian Mannarino after the veteran was handed a controversial medical timeout during the United Cup in Sydney on Wednesday.

Mannarino, 35, won the first set against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego 6-4 and the match was on serve in the second when he sustained a self-induced injury.

With Sonego up 30-0 and threatening to break serve, Mannarino hit himself with the butt of his racquet, causing his forehead to bleed instantly.

A trainer was then called onto the court, triggering a medical timeout for France in the teams event.

Masur couldn’t believe the chair umpire had stopped the match for such a minor injury.

‘If [an injury] is self-inflicted, can you have a timeout? You can’t injure yourself, can you?’ Masur said in commentary for Nine.

‘Let’s say you’re in a tricky situation, you go, ‘Right, I’m going to bash myself with a racquet and get a breather’.’

Courtside commentator Mark ‘Scud’ Philippoussis chipped in with: ‘Perfect timing [for Mannarino] at 0-30…..Time to gather himself.

‘Only at the other end, I guess he [Sonego] wouldn’t be happy. Now he has to cool off.’

Masur then went onto question the amount of time needed to tend to Mannarino, who only sustained a small cut.

‘Why has this taken so long? Get one of those little band aids, the round ones,’ he said.

‘This does not constitute a medical timeout, in my opinion.

‘This is not a good look for the sport … This is not necessary. The way the trainers are carrying on, you would think he requires stitches.

‘Blood is not streaming from his head. It is like a pinprick. I have seen it all now.’
