Colorado Rockies game no. 21 thread: George Kirby vs Cal Quantrill
With the sun out and temperatures warming up from last night’s snowy affair, the Colorado Rockies are looking to rebound in a major way against the Seattle Mariners this afternoon. This is game one of two for a classic double-header after Friday night’s game was postponed due to snow.
On the mound for the Rockies and looking to earn his third consecutive Quality Start is the right-handed Cal Quantrill. His last time out against the Philadelphia Phillies was a six inning Quality Start in which he gave up just one earned run on four hits and two walks, but struck out only one batter. Quantrill has an ERA of 5.57 and is the only member of the Rockies rotation with multiple Quality Starts so far this season.
Making the start for the Mariners is 26-year-old righty George Kirby. Kirby has made just one start against the Rockies in his career, allowing two earned runs on six hits in a victory last April. Kirby has had a few bumpy starts in 2024, but his last time out against the Cincinnati Reds he pitched six innings while striking out six batters and only gave up two earned runs. This season Kirby is running a five pitch arsenal that consists of a mid-90s four seam fastball, a slider, a sinker, a knuckle curveball, and a split finger.
Prior to today’s game, right-handed reliever Daniel Bard was transferred to the 60-day IL. With a spot on the 40-man roster cleared, the Rockies selected the contract of left-handed starter Ty Blach, who will wear no. 50 on his jersey once again. To make room on the 26-man roster, right-handed starter Noah Davis has been optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque. However, Davis will also serve as the 27th man for today’s double-header.
