The New York Mets have a tough decision to make with many of their younger players. Those questions for the Mets mostly focus on Mark Vientos and Brett Baty, two potential franchise pieces.

For New York, the question is if they want to compete now or allow their young players to show they can play at the highest level.

It was believed to be a possibility that the Mets could link with former slugger J.D. Davis.

For a cheap price, Davis made sense for the team, even if it was in a smaller role that still allowed for Vientos and Baty to play every game.

David Stearns spoke about allowing the younger players to play rather than adding a veteran, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

“I still think — and I’ll continue to think — that it’s important for us to give young players who have consistently succeeded at the Minor League level chances to contribute at the Major League level,” Stearns said.

His assessment of playing younger players is the right one, especially when the outlook of the season is factored in.

The Mets should be a decent team, but they aren’t expected to compete for a World Series or even a playoff spot.

Given that’s the case, why not let the younger players get every opportunity possible?

Does adding Davis help the future of this team or does allowing Vientos and Baty to play daily shape the future?

The answer is obvious.

At the worst, New York finds out that Vientos and Baty aren’t a part of their future plans.

The best outcome would be the two performing at a high level and giving the Mets an even better chance to compete moving forward.
