Soldier arrested as drugs and cash seized in swoop at Cork barracks

A soldier in Cork has been arrested by Gardaí after an investigation discovered a significant amount of drugs and cash at a Defence Forces base.

The investigation which was carried out by military police in collaboration with members of An Garda Síochána led to the search of Collins Barracks in Cork where officers discovered a large quantity of cash and ‘illegal substances’.

A member of the Defence Forces has been placed under arrest and is now in the custody of Gardaí, CorkBeo have revealed.

As part of the investigation, an official Defence Forces vehicle has also been handed over to Gardaí to allow for a technical examination to take place. It’s understood that the Defence Forces member who was arrested had recently driven the vehicle.

While military police played a significant role in this investigation, the discovery of cash and illicit substances now places this matter in the hands of Gardaí. It has been confirmed that military police will continue to assist Gardaí throughout the investigation.

A spokesperson for the Defence Forces said: “We can confirm that following an investigation led by the Military Police, a search of sections of Collins Barracks, Cork, was carried out in collaboration with An Garda Siochana (AGS).

“During this operation illegal substances and cash were discovered, leading to the arrest of a member of the Defence Forces who, as a result is presently under investigation by AGS.

“Additionally, a DF vehicle was handed over to AGS for examination as part of this ongoing investigation. This is now a matter for AGS and the MPs will assist with the investigation.”
