Watch: Irish radio producer has Dec Donnelly tearing up with family connection

Dec Donnelly became emotional as he discovered another Irish family connection and we have to admit, there were tears in our eyes as well!

During his appearance on Capital Breakfast with Chris Stark, Sian Welby and Roman Kemp, Dec was surprised to find out he was distantly related to someone on the station’s team.

A trio of producers paraded into the studio; Thomas from Newcastle who claimed he and Dec were second cousins, Kaz from Dublin who claimed she and Dec were distant cousins, and Anne from Sydney who claimed Dec was her dad!

Though Dec believed Thomas was his second cousin because of the Newcastle connection, it turns out Dubliner Kaz is the TV presenter’s distant cousin.

Explaining the connection, Kaz said both she and Dec have ‘roots in rural South Derry’. Kaz revealed her mum hails from Draperstown but that her granny is from Desertmartin- where Dec’s parents came from.

‘Your Uncle Charlie is my granny’s brother-in-law,’ Kaz enthused, explaining that her beloved gran is Dec’s aunt Rosie’s sister.

Kaz showed Dec a photo of his dad beside her granny and another of his parents in Desertmartin, neither of which he had seen before.

Kaz joked that the ‘entire of south Derry has been at this for weeks’, trying to pin down the connection and they’d managed to create a very impressive if very complicated family tree.

The comedian became emotional at the revelation and he and Kaz sweetly shared a family hug. We may be blubbering, but so are you!
