Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is currently among the top candidates to claim this year’s NBA MVP award.
Gilgeous-Alexander currently boasts the second-best odds, trailing only two-time league MVP Nikola Jokic.
While SGA is widely considered No. 2, NBA analyst Shaquille O’Neal believes the 25-year-old point guard should claim this year’s trophy.
“The MVP is SGA, period,” Shaq said during last night’s edition of NBA on TNT. “I saw something today, he’s one of the few guys that have 50 30-point games in a season. And he meets my criteria and everybody else’s criteria. He’s the baddest player in the game, and their team is 49-21, and Denver is 51-21. So, you can’t give it to the Joker [Nikola Jokic].”
Gilgeous-Alexander (30.4 ppg) is the NBA’s third-leading scorer so far this season, trailing only Luka Doncic (33.9) and Giannis Antetokounmpo (30.6). Meanwhile, Jokic continues to stuff the stat sheet with 26.1 points, 12.3 rebounds and 9.0 assists per game.
Jokic’s Nuggets currently hold the No. 1 seed in the West with a 0.5-game advantage over Gilgeous-Alexander’s Thunder.
