Rosemary's Baby Prequel With Julia Garner Gets Premiere Window

Rosemary’s Baby is getting a prequel on Paramount+. Titled Apartment 7A, the upcoming movie is set to premiere on the streaming platform ahead of this coming Halloween season.

“Apartment 7A is the perfect way to kick off the Halloween season,” said Jeff Grossman, executive vice president of programming at Paramount+, in a statement to Variety. “Director Natalie Erika James and the prodigious creative team have crafted a chilling and clever new entry into the genre.” Apartment 7A was first announced in March 2021. However, it wasn’t until filming wrapped in June 2022 that it was revealed that the psychological thriller was secretly a prequel to Roman Polanski’s acclaimed 1968 horror film, Rosemary’s Baby.

Based on Ira Levin’s 1967 novel of the same name, Rosemary’s Baby stars Mia Farrow as Rosemary Woodhouse, a pregnant newlywed living in Manhattan who begins to suspect that her neighbors are members of a Satanic cult who are grooming her to use her baby for their rituals. The psychological horror movie was a huge commercial success upon its release in theaters in 1968, earning over $30 million at the box office. Rosemary’s Baby also received critical acclaim and was nominated for two Academy Awards, winning Best Supporting Actress for Ruth Gordon, who portrayed Rosemary’s elderly neighbor Minnie Castevet.

Apartment 7A Is Set Right Before the Events of Rosemary’s Baby

“Set in 1965 New York City, and tells the story prior to the legendary horror classic Rosemary’s Baby, exploring what happened in the apartment before Rosemary moved in. When a struggling, young dancer suffers a devastating injury, she finds herself drawn in by dark forces when a peculiar, well-connected, older couple promises her a shot at fame,” reads the official logline for Apartment 7A.

Ozark star Julia Garner leads the cast of Apartment 7A as the young dancer, with Dianne Wiest (Mayor of Kingstown) and Kevin McNally (Pirates of the Caribbean) playing the older couple, believed to be the Castevets from Rosemary’s Baby. Marli Siu (Everything I Know About Love), Andrew Buchan (All the Money in the World), Rosy McEwen (Blue Jean), and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Wonka) round out the ensemble.

Julia Garner Joins the MCU

Apartment 7A may mark the latest project for Garner, but it certainly won’t be the actor’s last. She is currently filming the upcoming Universal Monsters movie, Wolf Man, opposite Christopher Abbott. The supernatural horror movie is a reboot of 1941’s The Wolf Man and director Leigh Whannell’s second Universal Monsters project after 2020’s The Invisible Man.

Garner has also been cast in Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer. Created by Stan Lee and John Buscema, Shalla-Bal was introduced in 1968’s Silver Surfer #1 as the lover of Norrin Radd, the original Silver Surfer. So far, she is the latest cast member to join The Fantastic Four, boarding the highly-anticipated reboot roughly two months after Pedro Pascal (Mister Fantastic/Reed Richards), Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman/Sue Storm), Joseph Quinn (Human Torch/Johnny Storm), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Thing/Ben Grimm) were announced by Marvel Studios.

Apartment 7A is set to be released on Paramount+ in Fall 2024.
