Rescued from Silkyara Tunnel After 17 Days, Bengal Man Wants to Stay & Complete 2 Days of Pending Work
He was stuck in the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi, along with 40 others, for 17 days. Now that Joydeb Paramanik is finally out, he does not want to return home but wants to continue to earn his livelihood.
Joydeb, a resident of Nimdingi in West Bengal’s Hooghly, is in constant touch with his mother and other family members via video calls but he wants to resume his work. It was only some years ago that he moved to another state for work, but the tunnel collapse changed the course of his life. He and two other workers from Bengal were stuck inside with the others for 17 days.
His family broke down when the news came and his mother, Tapati Paramanik, was visiting the temple daily to offer prayers for the safe return of her son. After coming out of the tunnel, he first called home and answered his mother’s questions about returning home. “I will not come home. I have two days of work left,” he told her.
Joydeb, who underwent treatment at AIIMS Rishikesh, said the first couple of days inside the tunnel were quite frustrating. There was uncertainty and worry crowded everyone’s minds. But, after that, it all went away. There were no issues other than the fact that they were unable to bathe. Even the food sent inside was good.
Joydeb reassured his mother that he is not facing any health issues and is now under medical observation. He has told her that only after his work period is over, he will come home for a proper holiday.
As posted by chief minister Mamata Banerjee, the West Bengal government has sent a special team to Uttarakhand to help the three workers from the state and their family members.
