Report: A.J. Brown Wants More Money After Philadelphia Eagles Paid DeVonta Smith
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown reportedly isn’t content to make the same amount of money as fellow teammate DeVonta Smith. The Eagles signed Smith to a three-year extension worth $75 million. He’s set to make $25 million a year, which is Brown’s base pay through the 2026 season.
DeVonta Smith is close to A.J. Brown
Smith talked about his relationship with Brown following Smith’s extension. Per the Eagles’ website, Smith said he’s grown close to Brown:
“I’ve grown very close to (A.J.), it means a lot to be able to go out there knowing guys who have similar stories, guys who have the same passion, the dedication that we have to this game, it means a lot to just go out here and be able to continue to do it alongside of him and everyone else in this building,” Smith said.
Brown and Smith want to be WR1
Smith also said Brown was happy for Smith, even though both receivers want to be WR1 on the depth chart:
“Everybody wants to spin it this way, in that way, but you have two guys who want to be the alpha. And I feel like that’s a good thing. You got two guys that are happy for each other. I mean, A.J., we talk every day. We call each other every day. We make sure that we talk on the phone every day, whether it’s football, life, last night we had the kids on the phone talking, you know, babies just sitting there doing the baby talk.”
Brown wants a new deal from the Philadelphia Eagles
But that doesn’t mean Brown doesn’t have his eye on securing a bigger bag and the WR1 job now that Smith has his deal in place. Per a transcription by Andrew Porter with 94 WIP, Howard Eskin with FOX said the Eagles have started conversations with A.J. Brown’s agent about a contract extension:
“I have kind of heard different things that—whether it is preliminary discussions—they are thinking about a new contract for A.J. Brown,” Eskin told Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie on Thursday’s 94WIP Morning Show. “Not trading A.J. Brown, they’re thinking about an extension for A.J. Brown…They’ve already started some conversation with A.J. Brown’s agent about an extension.”
Questions about Brown’s future in Philadelphia were raised after Smith signed his extension. The Eagles still have Brown under contract for three more seasons, so they have no reason to rush into a new deal with Brown.
Could the Eagles trade Brown? The New England Patriots called the Eagles this month about a potential trade. He was already traded on draft night once, could we see that happen this week?
