Feb. 8 (UPI) — A construction crew working on a future college campus near a Florida airport unearthed what turned out to be an inert World War II-era bomb.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said the crew was working at the site of what will eventually be Wilton Simpson Technical College in Brooksville, near the Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport, when they discovered the buried ordinance.

The sheriff’s office evacuated the area about a half mile in each direction and closed nearby roads while awaiting the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Team.

The explosives experts determined the decaying Mark 65, a 1,000-pound bomb dating back to World War II, was inert.

The sheriff’s office said the bomb will be disposed of by a crew from MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa.

The bomb’s origins are believed to be tied to the World War II-era military airfield that occupied the plot of land before it became Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport. The airfield was used for training exercises on B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators.
