The Blue Oval’s Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 set a new record at the National Hot Rod Association Winter Nationals in Pomona, California, this past weekend. The previous version of the pony car, the Super Cobra Jet 1400, broke the quarter-mile speed record for full-bodied electric vehicles back in 2021 at 8.128 seconds and 171.97 miles per hour. Now, just a few years later, the bar has been raised yet again with the updated Cobra Jet 1800 blasting down the strip at 7.759 seconds and 180.14 miles per hour.
Ford revealed its Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 in early-2023, built with more speed, less weight, and more refined handling to beat its older sibling’s speed record. “We’re always looking to push ourselves in every corner of the motorsport world,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance Motorsports in the press release, and push themselves they did.
The biggest hint to the Cobra Jet 1800’s success is in the name. The EV racer received a significant power boost from the Cobra Jet 1400’s 1,400 horsepower to 1,800 horses. The increase in power was made possible by hardware and software modifications, plus a drop in weight. Ford reports a 40-percent weight drop in the battery system alone. A redesigned powertrain provides a 30-percent boost in power, while the fine-tuned suspension utilizes improved geometry for optimum launches off the line. Also assisting with the torquey launches are four inverters and two double-stacked electric motor pairings mated to a new transmission system supplied by Liberty. Mickey Thompson drag radial tires grip the pavement to provide optimum traction.

Ford Performance
Ford Performance is confident that the second record will not be the last for the EV race car, promising that “the journey of the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 is far from over.”
“Seeing an all-electric Mustang tear down the NHRA strip in under eight seconds was nothing short of awe-inspiring,” said Mark Rushbrook, Director of Ford Performance Motorsports in the press release. “It’s a clear signal that Ford is not just participating in the electric revolution – we’re leading it, bringing our electric vehicle technology to the pinnacle of competitive racing. Every lesson we learn on the track is a step toward enhancing the performance of our EVs for customers, especially in Ford’s hybrid technology advancement. This leap forward wasn’t just about setting records; it was about reimagining the potential of electric power in motorsports.”
