Ohio State is expected to name Bill O’Brien its offensive coordinator, sources confirmed to FootballScoop on Thursday. ESPN first reported the news.

FootballScoop first reported the news of Ryan Day’s plan to bring in an offensive coordinator two weeks ago. Brian Hartline spent was promoted to offensive coordinator for the 2023 season.

O’Brien spent 2023 as the New England Patriots offensive coordinator, the place where he rose to prominence as an assistant on Bill Belichick’s staffs of the late 2000s.

That run led him to head coaching positions at Penn State and with the Houston Texans, lasting from 2012-20.

O’Brien was Alabama’s offensive coordinator from 2021-22, where he helped Bryce Young become the first Crimson Tide quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy.

Ohio State is expected to be a national title favorite in 2024. The Buckeyes should field one of the nation’s best defenses, with a greater emphasis on running the ball on offense. In addition to returning leading rusher TreVeyon Henderson, Ohio State secured dual-threat quarterback Will Howard and two-time 1,000-yard rusher Quinshon Judkins in the transfer portal.
