NCIS renewed for season 22 but future still uncertain for NCIS Hawaii

NCIS fans are rejoicing that a 22nd season will be on the way but there has still been no word on if NCIS Hawaii will return.

Currently in the middle of series 21, NCIS continues to attract millions of viewers each week and is the second-highest entertainment programme of the season, only behind Tracker on CBS.

As a result, the police procedural has been given the green light to return for another outing, renewed alongside sitcom The Neighbourhood which will be back for season seven.

In a statement, president of CBS Entertainment, Amy Reisenbach, said: “The Neighbourhood and NCIS are the very best definition of a CBS comedy and drama.

“They embody authentic storytelling with heart, humour and family dynamics. We are proud to bring them back next season.”

While it’s good news to see NCIS remain at the top of its game, there are now concerns over the future of spin-off NCIS Hawaii.

The island state-set drama is airing its third season, having first launched in 2021 and has continued to go down a storm with fans, especially those who love the Kate-Lucy relationship.

Despite it proving to be a worthy addition to the franchise, the network has so far remained silent on whether or not a fourth season is going to be on the way.

What is even more worrying is the fact that the latest NCIS show, as well as the mothership, has also been given a series order.

NCIS Sydney was renewed for a second season last month after the first outing made its debut in November 2023.

This is the first time an NCIS spin-off has been taken abroad with all previous series remaining within America.

Reisenbach said at the time: “The global power of the NCIS franchise became even stronger on broadcast and streaming with the addition of NCIS Sydney.

“Our American viewers have fully embraced these engaging characters, unique stories and the fabulous Australian scenery. We are thrilled to bring this show back to CBS next season and spend even more time down under.”

But this doesn’t necessarily mean that NCIS Hawaii will be cancelled as there could be a logistical reason for why the renewal is taking longer than expected.

Of course, only time will tell if the spin-off is going to be back for more later this year.

NCIS Hawaii season three is currently on a one-week hiatus, returning on Monday, April 15, for the episode The Next Thousand.

Its synopsis reads: “When a marine is murdered during training on the big island, the NCIS team tracks the suspect deep into the woods and discovers a disturbing secret.”

The NCIS franchise is available to watch on CBS.
