Former Alabama head coach and now ESPN College Gameday host Nick Saban shared his initial thoughts on Kalen Deboer succeeding him at Alabama. Deboer accepted the Alabama head coaching gig a little over a month ago and has garnered plenty of media attention in that time. This is what Saban had to say about Deboer Monday.

“I haven’t been around. I really tried to stay at arm’s length,” Saban said on Monday. “I don’t want them to think I’m looking over anyone’s shoulder. I think he’s hired a good staff and I think he’s a good man. I think he’s a great coach and I think he’ll do a really good job.”

Saban expressed how he has tried to stay away from the program and let the new head coach Deboer and his staff work with the Tide players and look toward the upcoming season. After 17 years of coaching down in Tuscaloosa, Saban is working to try to be a little distant and take a step back from the Tide.

Deboer has now finalized his staff after a lot of questions about who would officially be the offensive coordinator for this team. Nick Sheridan was formally announced as the offensive coordinator recently. Sheridan was Indiana’s offensive coordinator before becoming the Washington Huskies’ tight ends coach and now Bama’s OC.

Saban is confident that DeBoer is the perfect fit for the role. With his staff now firmly in place, DeBoer aspires to guide the Tide to numerous prosperous years, mirroring Saban’s success.
