PITTSBURGH — The Pitt Panthers have put together a small, but strong recruiting class to supplement some of the losses they’ve suffered this offseason. But as they try to fill the final remaining two roster spots, they missed out on a player they were interested as he entered the transfer portal.
Roddy Gale, a former Ohio State Buckeye, will spurn the Panthers and cross rivalry lines to join the Michigan Wolverines and new head coach Dusty May, he announced on Twitter through On3 basketball recruiting insider Joe Tipton.
Gayle broke through in his sophomore season with the Buckeyes, averaging 13.5 points to become the team’s third-leading scorer along with 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per contest while shooting 45% from the field and 83% from the free throw line. He started 35 of 36 total games this year. Gayle’s 3-point shooting took a step back as the volume increased – he shot 43% on 1.4 attempts in 2022-23 and just 28% on 2.8 attemtps this past season.
The 6’4 and 210-pound Gayle was a consensus top-5 recruit in the state of Utah and top 50 prospect in the class of 2022. He was ranked as high as the No. 3 shooting guard in his class by 247Sports. He chose Ohio State over offers from Alabama, Xavier, Syracuse, LSU, Louisville, Wake Forest, Oklahoma, Seton Hall, Oregon, Marquette, UConn and others.
