Eagles Solve Final Piece to 2024 Offensive Core With DeVonta Smith Extension
After signing several key contributors to contract extensions this offseason, Smith was the last domino to fall. Smith has continued to ascend in Philadelphia, despite the presence of A.J. Brown as a star wide receiver alongside him. The Eagles were wise to sign Smith to an extension now, as several other young wide receivers are eligible to sign massive contract extensions this offseason.
DeVonta Smith’s Extension Could Raise the Price of Jaylen Waddle
One of the young wide receivers who is due for a contract extension is Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. Ironically, Waddle and Smith were teammates at Alabama and drafted the same year. Now, they are both set for big paydays, with Smith helping set the price with his latest deal.
While Waddle likely isn’t considered the same caliber of receiver as Smith, it will be interesting to see what Miami will be willing to pay him given his important role in the offense.

Roseman and the Eagles like to sign their young, foundational players to contract extensions early. Not only does it allow them to get ahead of the market, but it also allows them to manipulate the cap hits and use things such as the fifth-year option year to their advantage. That’s exactly what the Eagles did with Smith, as his contract is surprisingly team-friendly given the amount of money that he is receiving.

Darius Slay and James Bradberry aren’t getting any younger in Philadelphia’s secondary. While Kelee Ringo, Eli Ricks, and Josh Jobe have shown promise at times, they are far from guaranteed answers for Philadelphia at cornerback.
Therefore, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise to see the Eagles hosting one of the top cornerbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft on a top 30 visit.
