NY, NJ see train, bus delays amid winter snowstorm

NEW YORK (PIX11) – As snow covered New York City’s streets Tuesday morning, it also slowed some subway lines to a crawl.

L trains were delayed Tuesday morning in both directions due to the storm, and track maintenance further delayed trains entering and exiting the Eighth Avenue station, transit authorities said.

Alternate side parking canceled ahead of NY snowstorm: ‘stay off the road’

Some Eighth Avenue-bound L trains were not running past 14th Street-Union Square as of 10 a.m., officials said.

Northbound N trains were running on the local track in both directions between 59th Street and 36th Street as the MTA stored some cars underground during the storm, officials said just before 10 a.m.

Mechanical problems are affecting several trains including the No. 7 after a train was removed from service at Grand Central station.

The Tottenville-bound Staten Island Railway was also running with delays Tuesday morning after a tree fell onto the tracks near New Dorp, according to New York City Transit. Several Staten Island express busses are also running with delays.

Normal service was expected all day Tuesday on MTA-run buses, subways, the Long Island Railroad and paratransit, according to MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. Metro-North was operating on a “robust but slightly modified” schedule, Lieber said.

Rail service in and out of Penn Station New York could see up to 60 minute delays after officials addressed an issue at the Hudson River tunnels.

For PATH Trains, a power outage at World Trade Center station suspended service from Journal Square station and Hoboken.

In Westchester, Bee-Line Buses were running with delays Tuesday morning including:

  • Route 8: running its standard snow detour route
  • Routes 13 and 19: avoiding Ossining RR Station; Main Street at Spring Street is first/last stop
  • Route 16: running snow detour; avoiding Strawberry Road
  • Route 34: avoiding Stadium Road; starting at Knollwood Road at Stadium Road
  • Routes 6, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 19: experiencing up to 60-minute delays
  • ParaTransit Service: running with delays.

In New Jersey, bus routes number 196 and 197 will originate and terminate at West Milford Park & Ride Tuesday, and bus route 196 will not run on Skyline Drive, officials said.

“NJ TRANSIT Rail will accept NJ TRANSIT Bus tickets and passes on Port Jervis Line trains to and from Harriman, Tuxedo, and Sloatsburg stations. Short Line Bus will accept NJ TRANSIT tickets and passes in Orange County,” New Jersey transit authorities said.

Even with delays, officials still encouraged locals to opt for public transportation over driving. New York City issued a travel advisory starting Monday night and lasting through Tuesday evening.

“Our objective is to keep the trains running as close to schedule as possible, even through the most difficult snowstorm because this is your alternative to being on the roads,” Gov Kathy Hochul said Tuesday morning.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
