Experts have shared a way to make peace lilies thrive (Stock Image)

Peace lilies are gorgeous, but it can be tough to keep them alive, let alone thriving, as they’re fussy houseplants.

These striking plants, with eye-catching creamy flowers, look great no matter what room they’re in – but if you’re struggling to keep them looking lovely, it could be to do with the room that it’s being kept in, according to experts. The plant can handle a little bit of neglect, but if you want your plant to flower and bloom, houseplant experts at The Little Botanical have shared that certain places in the home should be avoided.

The experts explained that keeping this plant in direct sunlight may scorch the leaves, and dry out the flowers, meaning that they cannot thrive. However, peace lilies are known for tolerance to low-light conditions, so they’re a better option for indoor spaces with limited access to natural sunlight.

They can brighten up a dark corner, however, they “are likely to produce more flowers and perform best in a lighter spot” – just not in direct sunlight.

So, where is best for them? Of course, they can survive in low light, but they likely won’t thrive. Experts say they suit “a location near a north-facing window” and can bloom happily there.

How do you know that your peace lily needs to be moved? If it has pale and curled leaves, then it means that it’s not getting enough light. Scorched leaves mean the plant is getting too much light. Often, if the plant is not blooming, it’s a sign of not enough light.

Location of the plant aside, it’s important that the plant is given enough water, but not too much. Peace lilies want moist, but never wet soil. Aim to water them once the top inch or two of soil is dry. Peace lilies prefer to be under-watered than over-watered, so don’t rush to water them when they don’t need it. “Filtered water is best” to use too, say the expert.

They explained: “Peace Lilies do not enjoy being over-watered, this will cause their leaves to droop, pale and turn yellow over time.”
