OpenAI rolls out Memory feature for ChatGPT users: What it is, how it works

Earlier this year in February, OpenAI revealed that it is testing a Memory feature for ChatGPT users. Now, the company has announced that Memory is now available to all ChatGPT Plus users except those in Europe or Korea.

How does Memory feature work in ChatGPT?

With the feature on, users can ask ChatGPT to remember something specific or let it pick up the details itself. It also helps ChatGPT to remember things you discuss across all chats and saves you from having to repeat information and makes future conversations more helpful, claims OpenAI.

OpenAI says that users are in complete control of ChatGPT’s memory. “You can explicitly tell it to remember something, ask it what it remembers, and tell it to forget conversationally or through settings. You can also turn it off entirely,” says the company.

For example, if you have explained to ChatGPT that you prefer meeting notes to have headlines, bullets and action items summarised at the bottom. ChatGPT remembers this and recaps meetings this way. Another example of how it works is that if you mention that you have a toddler and that she loves jellyfish and when you ask ChatGPT to help create her birthday card, it suggests a jellyfish wearing a party hat.

OpenAI has also made it easier to access all memories when updates occur. Users need to hover over “Memory updated,” and then click “Manage memories” to review everything ChatGPT has picked up from conversations and forget any unwanted memories. Users will be able to still access memories at any time in settings.

Furthermore, users can turn off memory at any time (Settings > Personalisation > Memory). While memory is off, you won’t create or use memories says ChatGPT. Do keep in mind that Memory feature is available to ChatGPT Plus users only. OpenAI hasn’t said if it plans to expand it to free users of ChatGPT or not.
