'The Premier League is acknowledged as the greatest league in the world, and it is a pleasure to have been nominated with so many other great players who have all enjoyed special seasons for their clubs.

'Overall, I've been very happy with the way I have played this season and really pleased that I have been able to contribute with the goals and assists throughout the season.

'I'd like to thank all of the City staff, coaches and especially my teammates because without them this wouldn't be possible. And I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted for me as the award means a lot.'

Foden was nominated alongside Man City team-mate and last year’s winner Erling Haaland, as well as Arsenal duo Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer were also nominated for the award.

Palmer was announced as the Young Player of the Year on Friday.

Foden becomes the fifth consecutive Man City player to win the Player of the Year award.

Kevin De Bruyne earned the award in the 2019-20 and 21-22 seasons, either side of Ruben Dias securing the honour.

Haaland claimed the award last season.

Foden is the first English player to win the award since Jamie Vardy in the 2015-16 season.

The honour is the latest received by Foden following a superb individual season, with the 23-year-old also winning the Football Writers' Association Player of the Year Award.

Foden received the award in midweek from FWA chair John Cross.

He earned 42 per cent of the award's vote, which was cast by the association's almost 900 members.
