‘No ordinary election’: 2 days ahead of 1st phase, BJP candidates get PM memo

NEW DELHI: As the campaign for the first phase ended on Wednesday, PM Narendra Modi put his weight behind BJP’s candidates by highlighting their contributions, stating that they needed to win in order to realise the goal of a developed India, and expressing confidence about their prospects.

In what was seen as an attempt to re-emboss his seal of approval on each candidate in the fray by describing them as a “great asset for me”, Modi used his communication with them to appeal to voters not to be deterred by the heat and turn out in large numbers. He also exhorted the cadre to make a last-minute push to see the party through.

While the theme was common, the content in different regional languages was customised for each candidate. For instance, in the one to TN BJP chief K Annamalai, Modi emphasised that the BJP candidate in Coimbatore had quit IPS to join politics, as well as his effort to strengthen the organisation in Tamil Nadu. He also sought to boost Annamalai’s prospects by portraying him as the likely winner and also seeking to link his personal electoral fate to the larger cause of a “developed India”.

The PM extended similar support to head of BJP’s media cell Anil Baluni, the candidate from Pauri Garhwal in Uttarakhand. “I would like to tell the people of your constituency that this is not an ordinary election. Families across India, especially the senior members, would remember the difficulties they have gone through in the 5-6 decades of Congress’s rule. In the last 10 years, the quality of life of every section of society has improved, with many of these troubles removed. Yet, a lot more is still to be done and this election will be decisive in our mission to ensure a better life for everyone,” he wrote.
