It’s looking ‘pretty good’ for the weekend
Rain will return over much of the country today but the weekend is looking “pretty good” after a shift in the outlook on some weather models.
The south of the country will see the heaviest rainfall with more than 10mm in some areas. There will be showery outbreaks elsewhere, but these should clear and give way to a pleasant evening.
Some weather models had predicted a wet weekend but these were revised yesterday, and the outlook is now much more positive, according to weather expert Alan O’Reilly.
“The weekend looks pretty good, considering what models had shown was possible,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Just a few showers but cool enough northerly breeze.”
Beyond the weekend, Met Éireann is currently predicting unsettled weather for the early days of next week as rain or showers spread from the south.
Here’s the latest outlook for the rest of the week from the national forecaster:
Thursday
Scattered showers in the north to begin today with some limited bright spells elsewhere. Becoming mostly cloudy by the afternoon, with showery outbreaks of rain developing, turning heavy later in parts of the south and southwest. Drier and sunnier conditions will develop in the north through the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees in light to moderate northerly or variable breezes.
Showery outbreaks of rain lingering in southern parts overnight. Cold with clear spells elsewhere, aside from a few showers near northern coasts. Some mist and fog patches too. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 5 degrees in light northeasterly winds, coldest in the north with a touch of grass frost.
Friday
Some bright or sunny spells tomorrow with well scattered showers, some heavy. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in a light to moderate northeasterly breeze.
On Friday night, showers will soon die away with long clear spells following. Some frost will set in. Cold with lowest temperatures of -1 to 3 degrees in light northerly breezes.
Saturday
A cool day with a mix of sunny spells and scattered April showers feeding in over the country, in a light to moderate northeasterly breeze. Highest temperatures of 8 to 12 degrees, mildest in the west.
Mainly dry and chilly on Saturday night with clear spells in a light northwesterly breeze. Lowest temperatures of -1 to plus 2 degrees with some grass frost forming.
Sunday
Sunday will see the likelihood of more general falls of rain moving in off the Atlantic during the day. Much of the south and southeast may stay fully dry however. Fairly cool with highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees. Northerly winds will likely veer westerly.
Unsettled for the early days of next week with rain or showers feeding up from the south. Turning a little milder.
