Nine Taylor Swift The Tortured Poets Department bombshells - from baby hints to suicidal thoughts

Taylor Swift unveiled her 11th studio album in the early hours of the morning, with The Tortured Poets Department taking the world by storm.

The album, which was announced back in February, was thought to contain several references relating to the singer’s split from Joe Alwyn, with it actually seemingly heavily referencing her fling with Matty Healy. But as well as Taylor referencing her past romances in her new body of work, the singer drops several other bombshells.

In her new album, Taylor sings about almost becoming a “functioning alcoholic” when a two-week love affair came to an end, with her also touching on failed wedding plans with Joe Alwyn in another track. Another song sees Taylor touch on suicidal feelings amid an intense romance, with her also seemingly making a brutal jibe at Kim Kardashian in a track from the extended version of the album after she unveiled a second record.

Taylor

She sings about almost becoming a ‘functioning alcoholic’

In the track Fortnight, Taylor takes aim at a heartbreaker whose tryst with her only lasted a mere two weeks. In the song, in which she collaborates with Post Malone, she notes how despite the love affair being short, it still turned her into a “functioning alcoholic” when they broke up.

In the first verse of the song, she sings: “I was supposed to be sent away / But they forgot to come and get me / I was a functioning alcoholic / ‘Til nobody noticed my new aesthetic / All of this to say, I hope you’re okay / But you’re the reason.”

She went on stage while ‘miserable’

In her song I Can Do It With A Broken Heart, Taylor sings about painting a smile on her face despite feeling broken-hearted. In the chorus she croons: “Breaking down, I hit the floor / All the pieces of me shattered as the crowd was chanting ‘more’ / I was grinnin’ like I’m winnin’ / I was hitting my marks / ‘Cause I can do it with a broken heart.”

Then, in the outro, Taylor can be heard almost screaming sarcastically when she sings: “You know you’re good when you can even do it with a broken heart / You know you’re good / Good / ‘Cause I’m miserable (Haha) / And nobody even knows / Try and come for my job.”

She felt ‘suicidal’ amid the thought of a breakup

In one of the songs, Taylor touches on how one romance was incredibly intense, so much so that both Taylor and a love interest felt suicidal at the prospect of them splitting up and parting ways.

In the title track, The Tortured Poets Department, Taylor sings: “You told Lucy you’d kill yourself if I ever leave / But I had said that to Jack about you, so I felt seen.” Swifties believe these lyrics are a reference to her pal Lucy Dacus and co-songwriter and close friend Jack Antonoff.

Failed wedding plans with Joe Alwyn

In the fifth track from the album, So Long, London, Taylor can be heard bidding a sad farewell to their relationship. In the track Taylor sings: “I’m pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free.”

She then shares the visions she had of the pair tying the knot, as she continues: “You swore that you loved me, but where were the clues? I died on the altar waiting for the proof.”

Joe

Also in the track, Taylor appears to hit out at Joe for forcing her to leave the city she loves. She sings: “I’m just mad as hell ‘cause I loved this place.”

Brutal Kim Kardashian jibe

After releasing her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, Taylor revealed that she was dropping a surprise second album with an additional 15 songs. And one song in particular caught the attention of fans. thanK you aIMee is the 24th track on the album and the lyrics seemingly feature some brutal digs at Kim.

“There’s a bronze spray-tanned statue of you and a plaque underneath it / That threatens to push me down the stairs, at our school,” Taylor sings in one line. She has previously spoken about her feud with Kim and how it “took her down psychologically”.

Kim

In another part of thanK you aIMee, Taylor also seems to hit out at Kim’s 10-year-old daughter North West. She sings: “And so I changed your name, and any real defining clues / And one day, your kid comes home singin’ a song that only us two is gonna know is about you.”

Matty Healy would have proposed to Taylor

Swifties are convinced that The 1975 frontman would have proposed to Taylor, but decided to end their romance to protect her career. Taylor’s fans were left furious after Matty’s controversial comments about porn resurfaced when they dated back in the late spring/early summer of last year.

Matty

Following the release of The Tortured Poets Department, Taylor’s fans took to X to share their thoughts about the split. “HE WAS GONNA PROPOSE TO HER IF IT WORKED WASNT HE,” one person questioned.

Another said: “He broke up with her to protect her from her fans and that absolutely KILLS MEEEE,” while a third fan added: “He broke up with her to protect her from ruining her career.” One heartbroken fan commented: “I can’t!!!! This is the most tragic love story…”

Taylor’s new song The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived is believed to be about her time with Matty. In the track, Taylor details a “starry-eyed” Jehovah’s Witness-suited lover who “rusted a sparkling summer” by “ghosting” her.

She sings: “You hung me on your wall, stabbed me with your push pins / In public showed me off, then sank in stoned oblivion.” She also sings: “I’ll say, ‘Good riddance’ / ‘Cause it wasn’t sexy once it wasn’t forbidden / I would’ve died for your sins instead I just died inside.”

Possibly referencing Travis Kelce

Super Bowl winner Travis Kelce, 34, is Taylor’s current boyfriend. The couple began dating last summer after her brief fling with Matty Healy, with Travis and Taylor’s romance making headlines from September onwards.

And now Travis is apparently serenaded in the track titled The Alchemy, which features apparent references to the American football player’s “touchdowns”. This sweet lyricism comes after she made headlines just cheering him on from the stands before and during the Kansas City Chiefs’ triumphant Super Bowl win.

Cheating allegations in Florida

Before the album dropped, Pop Crave, a popular culture-themed account on X, shared a tweet about a pop-up that Taylor set up for fans ahead of the album’s release. “The globe in Taylor Swift’s Spotify library has a pin for Orlando, Florida where Joe Alwyn allegedly cheated on her,” the account penned – with no proof of infidelity whatsoever.

On the album, there is a track titled Florida!!!, which is thought to reference the Tampa, Florida shows of the Eras Tour, which were the first shows after her split from longtime boyfriend Joe. The song sees Taylor collaborate with Florence + The Machine, with them crooning “I’ve got some regrets, I’ll bury them in Florida.”

Baby plans teased

In the song loml, which was originally thought to stand for ‘love of my life’, but is instead in reference to ‘loss of my life’, Taylor seemingly sings about baby plans that never happened – thought to be in reference to Joe Alwyn and their romance.

In the song she sings: “”You sh**-talked me under the table, talking rings and talking cradles. I wish I could un-recall how we almost had it all.”
