The Michigan Wolverines are about to send around 20 players to the NFL Draft this month, which leaves plenty of room for young players to step up. And that shouldn’t a problem for Michigan at most positions. Their defensive front is perhaps the best in the nation. Most other position groups are solid too. But their wide receiver room is bit lacking, to say the least.
Roman Wilson, Cornelius Johnson, and tight end AJ Barner are all gone. Between those three players, that means over 50% of Michigan’s receiving production from 2023 is now gone. Semaj Morgan and Tyler Morris should be great this fall, but after that the Wolverines have exactly zero wide receivers who caught even five receptions last fall for the team.
The Transfer Portal officially opens Tuesday April 16th, and Michigan should be one of top programs looking to add some depth at wide receiver. Lucky for them, they could actually steal a playmaker from one of their Big Ten rivals.
Keandre Lambert-Smith, WR Penn State is reportedly entering the transfer portal. He ‘s logged 38 starts throughout his career, capping off his first four years by racking up 673 receiving yards last fall. There’s a great change Lambert-Smith is one of the most experienced receivers in the entire nation that will be entering the portal.
Lambert-Smith only has one year of eligibility remaining, and will be transferring as a grad student, so there could be some academic hurdles to leap. However, he’s certainly worth a look for Michigan.
Outside of Tyler Morris and Semaj Morgan, Michigan is looking at starting a very inexperienced Fredrick Moore, a bevy of non-starting level wide receivers, or true freshman I’Marion Stewart. If they want to maintain national championship aspirations that’s simply going to cut it.
KeAndre Lambert-Smith was Penn State’s lead receiver last year, accounting for 21% of the Nittany Lions production through the air. He brings burning speed (ran a 4.5-second forty in high school), YAC ability, and plenty of experience winning at outside wide receiver where Michigan likely needs help most.
Regardless of whether Michigan pursues Lambert-Smith or not, keep an eye on the Wolverines as the Transfer Portal opens. New head coach Sherrone Moore may not seem too interested in passing a ton based on what he’s shown us already, but even he has to know that the team could use some help at wide receiver.
