Woman rushed to hospital after crash outside Wexford town

There were huge tailbacks on the main N11 road at Ferrycarrig outside Wexford town this afternoon after a two-vehicle road crash there.

The incident took place on the main road near the turn off for the Irish National Heritage Park.

The National Ambulance Service, Wexford Fire Service and Gardaí all rushed to the scene. Despite the concerns of several passers-by, who described it as “a very serious crash”, everyone emerged from the crash relatively unscathed.

One woman was removed from the scene by Ambulance to Wexford General Hospital for further treatment. However, her injuries are understood to be non life-threatening.

In the past, several councillors have raised concerns in relation to two junctions onto the main N11 at Ferrycarrig – both the turn for Wexford town off Ferrycarrig Bridge and the turn towards the Irish National Heritage Park and Killurin where this latest incident occurred.

Among them was Fianna Fáil councillor Garry Laffan who described the setup at Ferrycarrig as “an accident waiting to happen” as far back as July 2021.

“Firstly, I hope everyone is okay,” Cllr Laffan said in the wake of this accident. “But I’m very annoyed about this. I’ve brought this up so many times. If anything, the bollards that the council have put in at the junction for the Heritage Park have made it even worse.

“When the right-hand turn was taken away onto the Ferrycarrig Bridge, it had a knock on effect and we’re seeing a lot more cars doing u-turns at the turn off for Killurin or even in the entrance to the Heritage Park.

“In my view, the actions we’ve taken with the road are forcing people into making bad decisions and something needs to be done. We need to find some kind of solution to this before there’s another serious accident.”

Independent councillor Ger Carthy is also on the record as having raised concerns in relation to the speed limits on Ferrycarrig Bridge and the approach along the N11, having attended the scene of a number of accidents there over the years in his role with the National Ambulance Service.
