Michigan Wolverines Punished By NCAA For Violations
The Michigan Wolverines have been the target of many NCAA investigations in the past three years. The sign-stealing scandal rocked the college football world, but many forget that the Wolverines have other issues. 2023 started with some coaches being suspended due to self-reported violations. The governing body of college football handed down more punishments today stemming from recruiting violations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Michigan Wolverines Punished By NCAA
Michigan made a compromise and received a lighter punishment. The program will be on a three year probation, pay a fine, and have some recruiting restrictions moving forward. Additionally, there is a one-year show-cause order for individuals participating. No coach is receiving a suspension and the matter is considered closed. It is unclear whether Jim Harbaugh will receiver any punishment as he is now with the Los Angeles Chargers.
2024 And Beyond
What does this mean for the Michigan Wolverines? Ultimately, the program won the national championship. Unless the NCAA decides to vacate the wins after their sign-stealing investigation is done, Michigan has won the championship. It gives them some leeway in the coming years. While they do not seem to be having an issue attracting talent, the pressure is off to win. Now they can play spoiler in the Big Ten and maybe squeak into the College Football Playoff.
The Wolverines will have to deal with the punishment, but it isn’t as bad as it could have been. Ultimately, the fact that Jim Harbaugh is no longer with the program probably helps. It will be interesting to see if there are any other violations that happen in the coming years, but this matter is closed right now.
