Met Office verdict on when snow will hit Yorkshire as another deep freeze predicted

Yorkshire is set to face another spell of sub-zero temperatures as more snow is forecast for the county throughout February.

According to the Met Office’s latest long range weather forecast, “overnight frost, fog, colder spells and snow” are all set to arrive within the next month.

The predictions come as weather maps show that Yorkshire is at the centre of a 450-mile snow wall which will cover the UK from Scotland down to Birmingham.

Weather experts at Exacta have said snow could arrive before the end of January, but maps indicate it is more likely to be towards the end of the first week of February. The maps – produced by WX Charts – show temperatures just above freezing with snow covering a large part of the UK.

WX Charts say snow could arrive on Monday, February 5, and Tuesday, February 6. Northern and western Scotland will be hardest hit while parts of Northern England are set to get 3 cm of snow and lows of -4.

But according to the Met Office’s latest long range weather forecasts, it’s more likely that snow will fall across the region between the middle and end of February.

The Met Office long range forecast for the whole of the UK between February 8-22 says: “Through the middle of February, changeable conditions are most likely with the wettest and windiest conditions in the north and northwest. It is likely to be drier further southeast, although some wet and windy spells are still possible here.

“Later in the month there is an increasing likelihood of winds from the north or east, which will increase the chance of some colder spells and perhaps snow.”

The forecast for more freezing weather comes after Yorkshire was inundated with weather warnings during Storms Isha and Jocelyn, which followed previous snowfall across the county. Predictions for the next cold spell say the snow could fall at 10cm an hour in some areas.

And while snow is on the cards earlier than that according to weather charts, the Met Office is predicting that the start of February is likely to be filled with spells of rain and strong winds, with above average temperatures and some brighter intervals.

The long range forecast for the UK between Monday January 29 and Wednesday February 7 says: “Cloud and outbreaks of rain gradually move northwards across the UK during Monday, heaviest in some western and northern areas with some southern parts dry. Through the remainder of the period, changeable with spells of rain at times, but also some drier, brighter interludes.

“The heaviest and most frequent rain will tend to be across northwestern areas and accompanied by periods of strong winds. Further south and east settled periods are likely to be more prevalent, with the best of any sunshine and drier weather here.

“Temperatures are expected to be milder than average overall, although this doesn’t preclude shorter, colder spells at times, with a risk of overnight frost and fog accompanying more settled conditions.”
