Met Office speaks out as UK braces for 'worst snow storm in 14 years'

The UK is being told to brace for the “worst snow storm in 14 years” as Brits face a week-long deep freeze. Cold and largely dry conditions will continue, with the likelihood of much colder air by the end of the weekend and an increasing chance of wintry hazards next week, the Met Office has said, as the UK shivers after Christmas.

Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden reckons we could see snow right across the country. He says the snow risk is greater than any year since 2010. He said: “Over the next few weeks, there will be a high chance of snow with the risk higher than the same period over the past few years or indeed, since the big freeze of 2010.

“It is likely we are about to start seeing images of vast regions of the nation covered in snow during a cold spell which is likely to hold out for an extended period. As well as the risk of snow, we will see harsh overnight frosts and the coldest temperatures dipping as low as -15C in the coldest parts of the country over the coming weeks,” he told GB News.

Advanced weather modelling maps from WX Charts show snow could cover almost the entire country by the end of next week. Met Office Head of Situational Awareness Will Lang said: “There will be a resurgence in the really cold weather through the weekend and that spreads across the whole of the UK during the early part of next week. Initially, this means there will be more in the way of showers around the coasts, turning increasingly to snow for many areas, especially further north.”

Tony Wardle is a Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster. He said: “There is the potential for some disruptive snow through the middle to latter part of next week as warmer Atlantic air attempts to push in from the southwest.

“As this occurs, some substantial snow could fall in some places, but the details of that are uncertain at the moment.”
