While the lack of offseason moves was concerning at times, the Philadelphia Phillies have more than enough in their clubhouse to get the job done.
A team that features Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, and others always has a chance to win a World Series.
However, adding another arm to the mix could only help as they look to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers and others in the National League.
Dave Dombrowski has made significant moves throughout the past offseason and that’s resulted in one World Series appearance and a 3-2 lead in the NLCS.
Unlike like last season when they came up short, players on the roster have to perform when it matters most to achieve their goal of winning a World Series title.
Harper spoke with Yahoo Sports about the lack of moves this offseason, but admitted that they have to rely on the guys in the clubhouse.
“You can’t really keep going for every single year, right? You got to kind of rely on the guys that are in your clubhouse to get things done,” Harper said.
What he’s saying makes sense.
Ownership can’t be expected to just shell out large chunks of cash year after year if the one’s currently there aren’t performing.
Philadelphia did add a three-time All-Star in Whit Merrifield, a move that didn’t get as much recognition as it might’ve deserved
Merrifield was an All-Star in 2023 for the Toronto Blue Jays, slashing .272/.318/.382. With his ability to play left field, right field, and second base, he should find a spot in the lineup during most games.
It’s all business for the Phillies as they head into the season. Not many jobs are up for grabs, and with a veteran roster, that was to be expected.
Dombrowski has proven he’s willing to make a move if it’s needed and will likely look to do the same during the trade deadline.
