Martin Odegaard makes Arsenal fury clear after costly late error in Champions League exit

Martin Odegaard was visibly furious with the linesman late on in Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat away at Bayern Munich which saw the Gunners crash out of the Champions League.

Joshua Kimmich’s 63rd minute header was enough to hand the German giants a place in the last four, with the second-leg notably more cagey than the first. Back at the Emirates last week, the two sides played out a thrilling 2-2 draw that saw the lead change hands, but the Gunners couldn’t find the back of the net for the second successive game.

In truth, they didn’t even really come close to scoring at the Allianz. Even late on, when you’d expect them to be mounting pressure on their hosts, the Gunners struggled to create any sort of clear cut chance. The nearest they came was from an Odegaard strike in the 88th minute.

The Arsenal captain unleashed a left-footed effort that took a slight deflection off of Eric Dier before being palmed behind the goal by Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Odegaard immediately went to go and take the corner to keep the hosts under the cosh, but was left stunned when he saw the linesman flag for a goal-kick.

Usually notably calm and measured, Odegaard could not hide his frustration and was seen furiously protesting the decision directly to the official. The Gunners captain was clearly mouthing the words “two times”, in reference to the fact it struck both Dier and Neuer on the way out.

It summed up what was a difficult evening for the Gunners. They enjoyed more possession than some may have predicted and often played in Bayern’s half, but simply couldn’t find a decisive pass to threaten the Bundesliga titans.

The result means Thomas Tuchel’s side will play Real Madrid at the semi-final stage, after the Spaniards got the better of Manchester City at the Etihad via a penalty shoot-out. The German coach is aiming to become just the second manager to take three different teams to a Champions League final.

Arsenal were dumped out of the Champions League after losing 1-0 at the Allianz Arena

For Arsenal meanwhile, the focus now remains on trying to keep their faint hopes of a Premier League title alive. Speaking to TNT Sports after the loss, Mikel Arteta said: “What we have to play for is beautiful. Six games to go and we are two points behind City. It is a very difficult schedule for everybody.

“We have to go through the pain tonight and tomorrow, get up and come with the same attitude we did when we came here and hopefully beat Wolves.”
