Al menos 143 personas murieron en abril a causa de las lluvias y las tormentas en Pakistán, así lo anunciaron este martes 30 de abril las autoridades. Las lluvias intensas provocaron inundaciones repentinas y derrumbaron viviendas. Muchas personas también fueron alcanzadas mortalmente por un rayo.

El volumen de lluvia superó “164% los niveles normales en abril”, dijo Zaher Ahmad Babar, portavoz del servicio meteorológico de Pakistán.

“Estos patrones de precipitación irregulares son consecuencia directa del cambio climático”, añadió.

Pakistán, el quinto país más poblado del mundo -con 240 millones de habitantes-, se encuentra entre los más amenazados por el cambio climático, además de que es cada vez más vulnerable a los fenómenos meteorológicos extremos y el monzón, que suele llegar a principios de julio.

El número más elevado, con 83 muertos -entre ellos 38 niños-, se registró en la provincia de Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, en el noroeste del país, donde 3,500 viviendas resultaron dañadas.

“Las víctimas fueron el resultado del derrumbe de techos y deslizamientos de tierra”, dijo el martes Anwar Shahzad, portavoz de la autoridad provincial de Gestión de Desastres.

En Punjab, la provincia más poblada y granero de este pobre país del Asia meridional, el granizo destruyó cosechas de trigo.

La agricultura paquistaní debe adaptarse, estima Mariam Shabir Abasi, experta en cuestiones medioambientales. “Debemos ajustar nuestros calendarios de plantaciones y cosechas para evitar los daños causados por estas precipitaciones sin precedentes”, subrayó.

En abril, 21 personas murieron en Punjab, según las autoridades provinciales, entre ellas campesinos víctimas de un rayo mientras cosechaban trigo. En Baluchistán, en el sudoeste, al menos 21 personas murieron -siete de ellas alcanzadas por un rayo-, y las escuelas tuvieron que cerrar temporalmente.
