‘Setting the Standard’ Patriots QB Praises New Coaching Staff
In a new era for the New England Patriots, the team turned back the clock when it came to bringing in a veteran quarterback who can push the rookie and serve as either a bridge starter or an experienced backup.
Signing Jacoby Brissett this offseason gave the team immediate options even well before they decided on which rookie they would target.

Having played both the backup and starting roles in Washington last season alongside young quarterback Sam Howell plus the fact that he began his career in New England made Brissett the ideal option for a veteran in the room.
But last time Brissett was in New England, things looked a little different on a coaching staff led by Bill Belichick and an offense led by Josh McDaniels.
Brissett spoke about what Van Pelt is doing as the offensive coordinator and how he is optimistic under this new staff.
"It's about the players, and he understands that. He molds it around the guys we have on our team. Obviously, he played the position and has experiences in a lot of other places where he's been successful," Brissett says. "We're still learning what we are going to be. Obviously, the end goal is to score a lot of points. The cool thing is we have a lot of good players at a lot of different positions who can do a bunch of things."
The veteran also talked about his impressions as Jerod Mayo as a first-time head coach and a new style of leadership.
"The cool thing is you can tell he's trying to make the players on the team run the team,” Brissett said of Mayo. “Obviously, he's the head coach setting the standard. But he definitely puts a lot of responsibility on us players.”
