Kate Langbroek complains her male co-stars on The Project 'whip in five minutes before the show' while the women must spend '90 minutes' getting hair and makeup done

Kate Langbroek has revealed that she finds the 'gender gap' when it comes to glamour to be unfair.

The television and radio star tells this week's issue of Stellar Magazine that women who appear on TV must spend significant time in the makeup chair while men don't face the same expectations.

The 58-year-old says her male co-stars on The Project, which include Waleed Aly, Hamish Macdonald, Sam Taunton and Michael Hing, can make less effort than the women as they don't spend much time being glammed up.

'They whip in five minutes before the show' Kate said, but added that she would still have her hair and makeup done even if it was not required.

'But if I was on that show, or any other, and offered the opportunity to save 60-90 minutes a day, I wouldn't take it. Even though we dream of it when we see the guys' she said.

Kate said she has particular empathy for women who appear on breakfast television, given the early starts.

'I do think of that when I see the sisters who do morning TV: you know, Sylvia [Jeffreys] or Nat Barr' she said.

'It's like that Ginger Rogers/Fred Astaire thing, with their male co-host; they're doing everything he did but backwards, in high heels, and in hair and make-up 90 minutes before, so they must be getting in at, like, 3.30am.'

It's not the first time that Kate has discussed the disparity between herself and her male co-stars.

In 2023, Langbroek issued a lengthy apology after publicly exposing a gender pay gay dispute between herself and former radio co-host Dave Hughes on The Project.

She made the bombshell admission that she earned 40 per cent less than Hughesy during their time hosting Hughesy & Kate on the Hit Network for almost two decades.

Clarifying her shock admission, Kate said that she hadn't explained the full context of the situation due to the 'time constraints' of the Channel 10 show.

'Nor did I explain that when he found out, Hughesy was mortified - properly shocked - and immediately sought to rectify the situation,' she admitted.

'I had already procured parity for myself, by the way, but his instincts were so honourable he offered instantly to take a pay cut,' she added.

'He also vowed that from that point on, we would always negotiate together on the show we had built together, and we did, the following year, when we moved to SCA. Knowing that we could speak freely about our negotiations, and that we were treated as true equals at our new radio network was the best.'

Kate confessed that Hughes had been 'hurt' by her comments on The Project, which is she she felt the need to clarify them.

She also said that she and Hughes weren't 'estranged' and that she was 'mortified' that she'd led people to believe that.

Hughes backed up her sentiment, reposting her apology on his own Instagram page and writing: 'Thanks legend Kate! Estranged my a**e!'

In addition to the public apology, the pair patched things up in person by meeting up and taking a selfie together.

The drama came after, on The Project, Kate had shared a story about how she was shocked to discover Hughesy was being paid a higher salary than her during their time on radio.

'It turned out he was getting paid 40 per cent more than I was. This was the Hughesy and Kate Show that we had made together and didn't exist without us,' she said.

'Showbusiness is not a standard situation but we did a radio show together for 18 years. It changed our relationship when we talked about money and I then left.'

Kate co-hosted the popular Hughesy and Kate drive show alongside Dave from 2001 until January 2019, when she resigned to spend more time with her family.

She added the gender pay gap was a form of financial discrimination that women continued to face in Australia.

'Because we're lovers and breeders and take time out we are punished for that in our working lives.'
