Peter O'Mahony breaks silence about his future in Irish rugby

It’s been the question on rugby fans’ lips ever since Johnny Sexton hung up his boots for good following the World Cup – would Peter O’Mahony be next?

For the past six months, speculation has been ripe that the Cork player was also ready to walk away from the game after putting in a trojan effort over the years with Munster and Ireland.

Throughout the Six Nations, Peter was keeping his cards close to his chest and refused to be drawn on the topic but now we finally have an answer.

After much deliberation, he has chosen to battle it out for another year. In a heartfelt message to fans, he explained that his decision came after plenty of speculation on what was best for the team but also for his family.

‘It’s been a decision, I’ve had to make with my coaches and more importantly, my family and I feel it’s the right thing for me to do. I feel there’s one more left in me to give,’ he said.

He went on to talk of being grateful to be given the chance to play for Ireland and Munster as long as he has and said that staying on for another year isn’t an opportunity he could turn down.

He signed off his message saying: ‘All I have ever tried to do is my best for my province and country and that’s what I’ll continue to do over the remainder of this season and next.

‘Who knows what lies ahead but I’ve had nothing but great years and I will endeavour to make this last chapter of my playing career the best of all.’

In response to the news his other half Jessica couldn’t resist making a playful jab at the rumours circulating earlier in the year that he was headed to France.

‘Ireland beats the South of France anyway,’ she joked adding: ‘So pleased for Pete.’
