Kolkata Weather Update: Rain To Bring Respite From Heatwave As IMD Predicts Week-Long Showers
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a rain forecast for Kolkata, which is expected to provide much-needed relief for locals who have been suffering under a severe heatwave. The forecast includes thunderstorms and strong gusty winds from May 6 to May 8, with a brief pause on May 9, followed by more potential rain or thunderstorms on May 10 and 11.
Due to the heatwave conditions, temperatures in Kolkata have soared above normal, causing challenges to people engaged in outdoor activities. Although there was a slight decrease in temperature from 42 degrees Celsius to 39.2 degrees Celsius between Wednesday and Friday, the real-feel temperatures hit a high of 47 degrees Celsius due to the combination of dry northwesterly and humid southerly winds.
The Meteorological Department predicted Kolkata’s first northwestern thunderstorm of the year on Monday, which could normalize temperatures and bring rainfall, offering a break from the scorching heat.
However, despite the forecasted storms, six districts in West Bengal remain on high alert for severe heatwave conditions until Tuesday. These districts include Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman and Birbhum. The IMD’s predictions suggest that while some areas may find respite, others should continue to exercise caution due to the ongoing extreme temperatures.
Earlier, parts of South Bengal experienced light rain and thunder, signalling the beginning of a change in weather patterns. The IMD’s forecast for Kolkata on May 5 includes a partly cloudy sky with possible thunder and lightning, marking the start of a week that could see a significant shift from the recent scorching conditions.
