kolkata knight riders create history; end 4371 day wait for first win over mumbai indians at the wankhed stadium in ipl history in 12 year
Kolkata Knight Riders continued their red-hot form in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) with a historic win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai with a 24-run victory to climb to extend their lead to second place in the table and register their 7th win of the season.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first by Hardik Pandya; the Knight Riders’ top order collapsed as they were 57-5 in the 7th over. However, a gritty partnership of 24 runs between Venkatesh Iyer (70 in 52 balls) and Manish Pandey (42 in 31 balls) helped the Kolkata-based outfit post a total of 169 on the board.
In reply, Mitchell Starc showed his class for the first time in the 2024 IPL with a four-wicket haul. Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy, and Andre Russell took two wickets each to ensure the star-studded MI batting unit failed to build partnerships, and Suryakumar Yadav’s century went in vain.

Kolkata Knight Riders End Long Wait
The Knight Riders ended a 12-year wait and registered their first-ever victory at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai over the Mumbai Indians (MI) since May 16, 2012. This was only the second time in 11 matches that KKR has beaten the home team at the iconic venue, with the first coming as far back as 4371 days ago.
The win also comes as a good omen for the Men in Purple and Gold, as their only win over MI at Wankhede came in 2012, which was also the year they won the IPL trophy for the first time in history under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy.

Sunil Narine and Rohit Sharma are the only two players to feature in both games. Narine was the Player of the Match (POTM) of the 2012 victory with a stunning spell of 4-16 in what, like today’s game, was also a low-scoring clash.
It is worth noting that KKR’s two wins have come one year before Rohit Sharma took over MI captaincy and in the first season since Rohit was removed from the top job. In Rohit’s tenure in the top job, the five-time champions never lost to KKR at the Wankhede Stadium.
