Smith doubled down on his stance by using “muscle memory” as the excuse.
Kenny Smith made an appearance on Stephen A. Smith’s YouTube show Monday night to defend his take about Sabrina Ionescu having a better chance to beat Stephen Curry in their 3-point shooting competition had she shot from the WNBA distance.
Smith, 58, doubled down on his stance by using “muscle memory” as the excuse. He also went with the age-old comeback about how only real basketball players would understand him.
“Most people who know basketball understood what I was talking about,” Kenny told SAS. “Actually, I was advocating for her more than anything else because basketball is muscle memory. So, he practices from one range, she practices from the other.
“Why is he getting the advantage to shoot at his line? That’s an advantage. It’s not gender. It’s not genetics. It’s an advantage. Shooting is only muscle memory. People who don’t actually play the sport don’t understand it’s all muscle memory.”
Reggie Miller was much better than Kenny Smith in the NBA
Smith’s argument crumbles because his broadcast partner, Reggie Miller, was a much better NBA player and he called him out live on television for saying that about Ionescu.
This argument is far from over, especially since the All-Star Game is at Chase Center next year and Ionescu wants to challenge Curry once again, but with some help.
NCAA superstar Caitlin Clark would have to join the WNBA for a 2-on-2 match between her and Ionescu against Curry and Damian Lillard to happen.
Ionescu wanted to shoot from NBA range this year and it will likely be the same next season. Smith needs to stop running from his comments and just accept he was wrong.
