Not long after Kalen DeBoer succeeded Nick Saban as the head football coach at Alabama, he’s starting to remodel the Crimson Tide program in his image, and now that includes the coach doing away with one of Saban’s long-time rules.
Going forward, Alabama will allow its football assistants to speak openly with reporters during the spring, overturning a long-time practice set in place by Saban when he was head coach.
In addition, DeBoer will allow the media to view a portion of Alabama’s offseason and preseason football practices.
Saban is regarded as the greatest head coach in college football history — and his NCAA-record seven national championships help buoy that claim — but he was also known for limiting media access to many of his offseason practices and we rarely got to see his assistants speak about the team for further context.
Now, as Alabama heads into a new era, DeBoer is opening things up a little bit so fans can have greater access into the football program as it undergoes major change.
Having greater media scrutiny will also allow reporters to more closely monitor the progress of the football team and ask more detailed questions about the roster and DeBoer’s overall strategy.
