UConn’s Aaliyah Edwards has broken nose, no concussion

UConn star center Aaliyah Edwards’ nose is “way broken,” coach Geno Auriemma said Sunday, after she took an elbow to the nose during the Huskies’ win over Providence on Saturday.

Auriemma, speaking after No. 9 UConn’s 58-29 win over Marquette in the Big East tournament semifinals, said Edwards is doubtful for Monday night’s title game against Georgetown, but should be ready for the NCAA tournament.

Auriemma said Edwards did not suffer a concussion, but must be able to breath freely and be comfortable before he will let her take the floor.

The injury occurred as Edwards was fighting for a rebound on the offensive end with the Friars’ Sarah Bandoma with just over six minutes left in the third quarter Saturday.

Edwards, who had 12 points in the game, lay on the floor crying in pain for several minutes before being helped to the locker room with a towel covering her face. The senior came into the game averaging 17.9 points and 9.5 rebounds.

Edwards later returned to UConn’s bench with a splint on her nose.

The short-handed Huskies needed Paige Bueckers even more than usual Sunday, as they had just seven available players against Marquette. Injuries had already put five other players out for the season.

The Big East Player of the Year came through, scoring 27 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
