While it was displayed on a shelf for a decade, it was never played with and sold in mint condition. The fact that it comes with a signed certificate of authenticity and the bottom of the truck was signed by Don DeSalle himself only adds to its value.

The most unique element of the Tonka aerial ladder truck is that it was made while Mound Metalcraft was in the process of rebranding to Tonka Toys. On the edge of the trailer, it still has M.F.D. (Mound Fire Department) printed along the side.

While its $900 selling price might come as a surprise what with all the marks, to the right collector, it tells a story. A played-with toy is much more special than one that spent its entire life on a shelf.

This set had some wear and tear when it was sold, including a broken hydraulics system, some black markings on the dump truck and tape on the corners of the box.

That’s what buyers expect when it comes to used toys, and the set sold for over $3,000.
