Philadelphia Flyers prospect Massimo Rizzo was part of the University of Denver team that beat out Boston College 2-0 on Saturday’s NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey National Championship game, clinching the school’s second title in three years.
The Pioneers also now hold the record for winning the most championship titles, this being their 10th.
Jared Wright and Rieger Lorenz were the goal scorers for Denver, while goaltender Matt David made some highlight-reel worthy saves to shut out Boston.
After a particularly important save from Davis, Rizzo apparently turned to teammate and roommate Aiden Thompson and said, “We are winning this game.”
This is not Rizzo’s first time being a national champion with the Pioneers, having won the title back in 2022, along with current Flyers winger Bobby Brink.
Across his three years at Denver, Rizzo has played in 107 games, recording 39 goals and 87 assists. He’s also collected a number of individual accolades, including being an NCHC Rookie of the Year finalist during the 2021-22 season, while making the All-NCHC First Team, being an NCHC Forward of the Year finalist, and a nominee for the Hobey Baker Award during the 2022-23 season.
