New weather models show an increase in expected rainfall for next week as previous predictions of an ease in damp weather are quashed, though with the rain will come higher temperatures.
The unyielding wet weather spring that has spoiled the sky line over the past number of weeks appears to have been granted an extra week at least.
However, while the rain has gone hand-in-hand with a numbing coldness in the last few days, with snowfall seen in Cork and Kerry on Wednesday, next week’s forecast offers some mercy by way of significantly warmer temperatures.
According to weather expert Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather on X, the amount of expected rain going into next week will spike.
Although less rain than we have seen this week, O’Reilly says, next week’s rainfall still looks ready to rise rather than give way to more settled conditions as earlier models suggested.
Below is a chart outlining the total rainfall forecast for next week.
Rainfall projections (in millimetres) for Easter week shows a gradual daily increase
Here is another chart, this time demonstrating rainfall for Ireland at midday next Wednesday, April 3.
The blue areas indicate total rainfall between 15-30mm and the red areas suggest heavier rainfall in the 40-70mm range
As for Thursday’s weather, the UK Met Office placed a Status Yellow rain warning on counties Antrim and Down which will be valid until 3am on Friday morning.
Met Éireann is predicting a frosty morning with rain spreading over Ulster and North Leinster which might turn sleety in some areas, with more rain later on in South Leinster.
Munster and Connacht will enjoy more prolonged dry periods with isolated showers.
Met Éireann’s daily weather breakdown:
Thursday
Cold and frosty for some this morning with outbreaks of rain spreading over Ulster and north Leinster, turning to sleet or snow in places before clearing this evening. Another spell of rain will develop in south Leinster in the afternoon. A drier day in Munster and Connacht with sunny spells and isolated showers. Highest temperatures of 5 degrees in the north to 10 degrees in the south in light to moderate northerly winds, occasionally fresh in the north.
Good Friday
There will be a mix of sunny spells and showers tomorrow. Some showers will turn heavy with a chance of hail and isolated thunderstorms. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in light to moderate southerly winds, fresh at times in the south.
Saturday
A largely dry start with sunny spells but blustery showers will spread northeastwards across the country during the morning and afternoon, some turning heavy with hail. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in moderate to fresh southerly winds.
Easter Sunday
Quite cloudy with continued showers, turning heavy in some places. Milder with highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in light to moderate southeasterly winds.
Monday
Current indications suggest that Monday will be a dull day with outbreaks of rain. Highest temperatures of 9 to 14 degrees in moderate easterly winds.
The national forecaster also predicts an “unsettled” week next week with showers and rain dominating the weather maps.
