Iranian Foreign Minister Hosein Amirabdolahian has confirmed that the government will soon invite Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud for a visit to the country following the agreement to normalize bilateral relations, broken in 2016.

Amirabdolahian confirmed in an interview with Al Jazeera TV network that Tehran has received Al Saud’s invitation for a visit by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, before assuring that Iran will soon send another reciprocal invitation.

The statements came after Iranian media confirmed that Amirabdolahian will meet during the month of Ramadan with his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan, amid efforts to consolidate the restoration of bilateral ties.

Tehran and Riyadh severed diplomatic relations in 2016 following an attack on Saudi missions in Iran by protesters calling to halt the execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr and are indirectly embroiled through the Yemen war, where Riyadh backs the Yemeni government while Tehran does the same with the Huthi insurgency.

On the other hand, he warned the United States and the three European countries that signed the 2015 nuclear agreement – France, the United Kingdom and Germany – that the window of opportunity to reactivate it ”is still open”, although he stressed that ”it will not be open forever”.

The talks have been stalled for months, amid international concerns after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) found uranium enriched above 80 percent at the Fordo plant, although Tehran maintained that the claims concern ”a particle that cannot be seen even with a microscope”.

Iran has announced the withdrawal of its commitments on several points of the 2015 nuclear deal after the United States unilaterally pulled out of the pact in 2018, although Iranian officials have argued that these steps can be reversed if the United States withdraws sanctions and returns to the agreement.
