Tributes pour in for Meath Grand National winning jockey and work-rider for iconic steeplechaser Arkle

Tributes have been paid to a county Meath man who once rode three-time Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Arkle to victory following his passing at the age of 93.

Ashbourne father of eight Paddy Woods died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, leading to a flood of tributes from across the horseracing world and beyond.

A revered and decorated jockey, Woods won two Irish Grand Nationals in 1963 and in 1965 respectively.

But it was his association as a work rider for the most iconic steeplechaser of all time that the proud Meath man will be most remembered for.

In being Arkle’s specified work-rider, Woods went on to enjoy success in the irons aboard the legendary steeplechaser when winning the President’s Hurdle at Gowran Park in 1962.

Many of those throwbacks have taken centre stage in a wide raft of tributes that have been paid since news of the Ratoath native’s passing filtered through.

“A true gentleman who loved his racing and football and his beloved (late wife) Phyllis,” read one tribute.

“Rest in Peace Paddy, you will be sadly missed but never forgotten. A true Legend in Meath and thank you for all the good work to help young athletes in St Andrews Athletic Club.”

Others, meanwhile, singled out his long held association with the Dreaper family with whom he carved out a reputation of considerable eminence as a talented jockey.

Some of those who knew him best, pointed to his love of GAA and exuberant persona.

“A great character, full of devilment and fun,” added a further tribute.

The late Paddy Woods will lie in repose at McEntaggart’s Funeral Home, Ratoath from 3pm until 7pm on Friday.

His funeral mass will take place on Saturday at 11am in the Holy Trinity Church, Ratoath, followed by cremation in Dardistown Crematorium.
