Ian Wright hits back at Jamie Carragher over "disrespectful" comments on Man Utd star
Ian Wright believes Jamie Carragher was “disrespectful” with his criticism of Casemiro following Manchester United’s drubbing at Crystal Palace.
The midfielder was forced to fill in as a centre-half but made numerous errors as the Eagles smashed four past their helpless opponents. Casemiro has been below par all season with his age appearing to catch up with him, despite producing a stellar campaign last term.
The Brazilian’s time looks to be up in Manchester with his mammoth wages becoming a problem as he continues to underwhelm. So much so that he’s no longer a guaranteed starter with Kobbie Mainoo coming through the ranks and dislodging the 32-year-old.
Carragher claimed that Casemiro’s time playing at the top level was up and that those around him should urge him to pursue a move elsewhere come the summer with the Brazilian, who he labelled as a “modern great”, being made to look sub par.
He said on Sky Sports: “Casemiro should know tonight as an experienced player that he should only have another three games left at the top level – the next two [Premier] league games and the [FA] cup final – then he should be thinking I need to go to the MLS or Saudi. I’m deadly serious – his agent, the team of people around him, they need to tell him: this has to stop.”
He also added: “I am nowhere near on a level of what that man has achieved, [winning] Champions Leagues, playing for Brazil and Real Madrid. But I always remember something when I retired myself, and there was a saying I always remember as a footballer: ‘Leave the football, before the football leaves you.’ The football has left him – at this top level. He needs to call it a day at this level of football and move.”
Casemiro was part of a Real Madrid outfit that claimed five Champions League titles in less than a decade as he formed part of an iconic midfield. However he’s struggled to consistently producing having opt for a new challenge in the Premier League.
Jamie Carragher has urged the Brazilian to walk away from the top level
Wright though insists the United midfielder has every right to continue operating at the top should he wish. Instead he criticised the Manchester outfit for not having the players to aid him as he enters the latter stages of his career.
He said on the Wrighty’s House podcast : “I wanted to mention Casemiro quickly because he’s been one of the main talking points after that game. We saw Jamie Carragher mention him on the show, about how great he’s been over the years and that maybe he should stop now and go to the MLS or Saudi which I thought was really quite disrespectful if I’m being honest.
Wright also claimed: “Whatever people say about him, I don’t think he is done. I don’t think he is. You can see we’re talking about a world-class player who’s played in a world-class team. A club of United’s stature should have players who can help him.”
