Ian Bailey's funeral to take place in coming days as he 'wished to be buried in Ireland'

The funeral and burial of Ian Bailey is due to take place in west Cork in the coming days, it is reported.

Mr Bailey, who was known as the chief suspect in the murder case of Sophie Toscan du Platier, passed away aged 66 on Sunday.

He died following a suspected heart attack after collapsing on a street in Bantry, Co Cork. Mr Bailey, who was originally from England, had previously been treated for heart disease and had suffered two heart attacks.

His death was confirmed by his solicitor Frank Buttimer who said be believed Mr Bailey wished to be buried in Ireland, the Irish Examiner reported.

Mr Buttimer said: ‘My belief is that he always wanted to remain in Ireland following his death and that his remains would be interred here.’

This comes after his ex-partner, artist Jules Thomas, said that she ‘feels nothing’ after receiving news of his death. She said: ‘He isn’t in my thoughts.’

Over the years Ian had been heavily associated with the Sophie Toscan du Platier murder case, taking part in interviews and TV programs.

Sophie’s body was found dead in 1996 near her holiday home, in West Cork, just before Christmas Day.

Questioned by the Gardai, Ian was never charged with her murder and to this day Sophie’s murderer has not been found.
