‘I don’t care’: UP Class 10 Board topper Prachi Nigam shuts down trolls who mocked her facial hair
When Prachi Nigam, a Class 10 girl, topped the Uttar Pradesh Board examinations of 2024 with 98.5 percent, she would not have imagined, in her wildest dreams, that people on the Internet would focus on her appearance alone.
Nigam was mercilessly trolled by many across social media platforms for her facial hair. Trolls—people like all of us, who have family and friends—for the lack of a better word, ignored the fact that she is just a kid, barely 16, and overlooked her achievement.
Nigam, however, responded to trolls mocking her.
Addressing the trolls in an interview with BBC Hindi, Nigam said, “However God has made me, I am okay with it. For those who feel there is a difference, it doesn’t matter. Even Chanakya was trolled, and he did not care. Similarly, I also don’t care and will focus on my studies.”
From her statements, it looks like she is someone who would see and appreciate the positives in any situation. “When my picture was shared on social media as the UP Board examination topper, some people trolled me. At the same time, there were people who supported me. I want to thank them all,” she said.
Mamta, Nigam’s mother, also spoke to the BBC and reacted to the trolls. Mamta said she felt bad after people trolled her daughter but that she did not let the trolls affect Nigam.
The brutal trolling Nigam endured made headlines. According to reports, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi spoke to Nigam and asked her to focus on her studies.
Meanwhile, Bombay Shaving Company is receiving backlash after it published an advertisement on Prachi Nigam’s being trolled. The newspaper ad read, “Dear Prachi, They are trolling your hair today, they’ll applaud your A.I.R. tomorrow.”
