Hyderabad Telangana Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Voting date, results, candidates, main parties, and schedule
The Hyderabad constituency in Telangana is one of the 17 constituencies in the state. Upcoming Lok Sabha elections later this month here promise to be a gripping showdown between All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen’s (AIMIM) Asaduddin Owaisi, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Madhvi Latha, and Congress’ Mohammad Waliullah Sameer.
This electoral battle features two Muslim candidates, Asaduddin Owaisi and Mohammad Waliullah Sameer, alongside the BJP’s Madhvi Latha, who has emerged as a prominent figure due to her association with the triple talaq campaign.
Owaisi, a four-time Member of Parliament, has held the Hyderabad seat since the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, consistently securing victories by substantial margins. However, the BJP’s nomination of Madhvi Latha signals a strategic move to challenge Owaisi’s dominance in the constituency.
In addition to AIMIM, BJP, and Congress, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has fielded Gaddam Srinivas Yadav as a candidate, potentially influencing the electoral dynamics despite slim winning prospects.
In past elections, Owaisi secured significant victories, winning by margins of nearly 3 lakh votes in 2019 and close to 2.5 lakh votes in 2014. Nevertheless, the Congress’ inclusion of Mohammad Waliullah Sameer as a Muslim candidate could impact Owaisi’s voter base and potentially benefit the BJP.
Hyderabad’s demographic composition, with an over 30 % Muslim population according to the 2011 census, has traditionally favoured Owaisi and his party, providing a crucial electoral advantage since 1999. Asaduddin Owaisi’s father, Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi, has represented the Hyderabad Lok Sabha since 1984. However, the presence of multiple contenders this year and the BJP’s focused campaign strategy add layers of intrigue to the electoral landscape.
Voting in Hyderabad is due in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha Elections, on May 13.
