New Jersey’s highest paid school superintends ranked for every county.
Bergen County has three school district superintendents that make more than $250,000 a year, according to the latest New Jersey Department of Education data.
Bergen County Vocational Technical School District Superintendent Howard Lerner was the highest paid superintendent in Bergen County for the 2022-23 school year, state data shows. He earned $319,134.
The average pay for full-time superintendents in New Jersey was $187,572 during the 2022-23 school year, up 3.6% from the last year’s average of $181,037, according to data for the 2022-23 school year released by the state Department of Education.
New Jersey superintendents make about $25,000 above the national average of $156,468, according to the School Superintendents Association. A wage cap put in place by former Gov. Chris Christie was eliminated by Gov. Phil Murphy in 2019, allowing superintendent salaries to rise above $191,584.
Most superintendents in the state are full-time employees. Just 15% of superintendents statewide hold the job on a part-time basis.
Salaries are self-reported by school districts to the state Department of Education. The data was published by the Department of Education in July 2023 for the 2022-23 school year.
Some superintendents may no longer be employed by the district, and raises may have been given between the 2022-23 school year and the 2023-24 school year.
